About Me
I am stone carver and letter cutter with over 20 years’ experience. I design and make bespoke headstones, memorials, plaques and decorative carvings to commission. I work from my studio in Abergavenny, in the heart of the Black Mountains, South Wales. I accept commissions from all over the UK and beyond. I have made memorials for Monty Python’s Terry Jones and for the Welsh rugby captain and commentator, Eddie Butler, among many others.
I fell in love with letterform at primary school, making covers for my exercise books. At home, I was never without a paintbrush, a glue pot and a stack of old cereal cartons for making an endless succession of houses, boats, masks, etc…
I began stone carving in 1999, at a weekend course in relief carving run by a traditional arts charity. Realising that I had found my vocation, I undertook a Modern Apprenticeship in stone masonry at the City of Bath College after which I worked as an apprentice to an established letter cutter and designer in Oxfordshire, before setting up my own business in 2003.
In recent years, I have begun running classes in stone carving and letter cutting in stone and slate at my beautiful workshop in Abergavenny.
